In an era of interchangeable bands, Jealous Nostril record on tape, shoot on film and play live without backing tracks or props. Formed in 2022, they are a heavy art-rock London-based band consisting of Johnny Borrell (Razorlight/Libertines/Florence and the Machine) and ElliS D (ElliS D).
The riffs are heavy, so you can use a capital R for Rock if you have to... but they've never listened to AC/DC and despise Pink Floyd, citing Snoop, Dre, Daft Punk, Svaitislav Richter and Damon Albarn as influences. Ok, you can have CAN, Mitch Mitchell and Pixies if you need them.
2022’s Debut single PHASE 6 was the group's DNA writ large. Tight but loose, lean but yuuuuge, simple and beguiling. Cut at Eastcote studios in London in an afternoon, mixed and mastered the same day, minimal overdubs, all on tape. Like Please Please me, like Elephant, like James Brown, like every record made before 1965, Like..... the old days? Throughout 2023 they fired out a series of declamatory singles defining their stripped down, raw but crafted sound ‘California Is Their Kryptonite’, ‘Problems’, ‘Lovebomb’ and coming soon ‘Cry. Cry’.
"I just think it is that simple, bands should sound like bands, most don't these days. We're pretty much more Jack White than Jack White when it comes to the process of getting the songs down. And preforming, yeah, we're total purists. I think the sound of a band in a room still has infinite potential."
And the name?
"Jealous Nostril, a binary system... One is fulfilled the other isn't" Is it a drug reference? "the half of my north London friends who still party hear it as cocaine, and the half who have been through re-hab, ask me if it's referencing Pranayama yoga breathing. We're definitely neither a coke or a yoga band! I actually think I just wanted a name that would help people under-estimate the band"
